Description

In order to join the mesh connect to the accesspoint with essid wsfii.org first to download olsr. It will autoconfigure your computer with DHCP and give you internet access. If you want to stick to that - fine. If you don't - nice - carry on...

We have a wiki-page with this information and other resources online:

[WWW] http://www.okfn.org/wsfii/wiki/WirelessNetworkAccess

That page may also contain new information - so if you get stuck somewhere, check it out.

It is a little more complicated to get into the mesh than just switch your machi ne on - but we hope that you will be impressed with the results. Go to the [WWW] http://www.olsr.org website and download the olsr-client for your OS. Olsr.org supports Mac OS-X, Linux, Microsoft Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP, FreeBSD, NetBSD. If your machine runs Linux and has a Atheros WiFi Card please get the newest driver and compile it. The driver is notorious to confuse other cards that operate in ad-hoc mode. Also the Centrino Wireless is suspicious - on any OS. Sorry! That is not basically a mesh or olsr issue - our mesh is working in ad-hoc mode and sloppily implemented drivers can cause a lot of disturbance. Most wireless networks operate in Accesspoint mode and manufacturers developer neglect Ad-hoc mode. That is a pity, but we hope that will change in the future. If your driver causes trouble please resort to the accesspoint. And don't forget to complain at the manufacturer of your card...

Once you have downloaded and installed the olsr program configure your wireless interface to join the network with Essid (network name) olsr-mesh, channel 2, mode ad-hoc. Further you should have received a sticker with your IP-address. Please configure your interface accordingly in order to make it work.

On windows start the application called olsr switch. Select your wireless interface and check 'start'.

On Mac OS-X, install the olsr package. After installation, start the olsrlounge program in /Applications.

On Linux or BSD copy the olsrd.conf to /etc/ or launch

olsrd -f /my-configuration-file-is-here/olsrd.conf optionally followed by a -d 1 to display more verbose output.
