Fading Ways Music Label

Fading Ways Music UK is an indie label that has been issuing all its new releases under CC licenses since March of 2004. Fading Ways has a catalogue of 40+ titles distributed throughout 14 countries, and also issues a series of CC ShareAlike (CopyLeft) samplers titled "Share".

Fading Ways hopes to educate musicians and fans alike with regards to the many wrongs and copywrongs perpetuated by the major label cartel and their lobbyists, and stands in direct opposition to WIPO and the EU IP Enforcement Directive. Music is culture. Diversity and independance MUST be protected by our governments from the harmful effects of corporatist multi-national organizations that have effectively hijacked copyright legislation.

The Fading Ways Share samplers volumes 1, 2 & 3 can be downloaded for free at http://www.fadingways.co.uk/music.htm

We would also like to invite you to join our label discussion forum at http://www.forum.fadingways.com/. We have a section dedicated to talking about Creative Commons, and most of our artists are regular contributors to the discussions.

CN UK Media Foundation

http://www.cnuk.org/

CNUK is a non-profit organisation that is dedicated to creating and promoting creative works that can be built upon, shared and sampled. All not-for-profit, with for-profit options left available to the creators.

Put simply: We use copyright law to change 'All Rights Reserved' to 'Some Reserved'. You keep your copyright but allow people to copy, distribute, modify (or sample) your work provided they give you credit and share their work in the same way. Everybody benefits.. It's all about sharing.

RemixReading

http://remixreading.org/

Remix Reading is an artistic project based in Reading, UK. It's aim is to get artists (working with music, video, paint, wood or any other medium that can conceivably be represented on a web site) to come together and share their work, be inspired by each others' work, and ultimately to create "remixes". All material on the web site is released under a Creative Commons license, which allows you to customise your copyright so others can use, copy, and share your work as you choose.

Loca Records

Homepage: http://www.locarecords.com

A Brighton-based label that is very progressive in its attitude towards copyright. You can preview the music and buy CDs and LPs.

LOCA believes that the fight over Free/Libre and Open Content and Media is a struggle over the freedom of expression and the freedom of speech, radically opening up the possibilities of media. To this end LOCA is releasing music under so-called copyleft, a license that enables music writers to develop music collaboratively and equitably and then release it into the commons. Using these licenses LOCA hopes to provide the control necessary to prevent cynical exploitation of work that is released in this open way and to encourage others to do the same. We hope that musicians who contemplate using the work released in this manner will honour the license and release their work under a public license resulting in a radical rejection of the whole capitalist ethos of these multinational media corporations.

MoblogUK Copyright Commons licensing

http://moblog.co.uk

MoblogUK, a UK based site dedicated to people blogging from their mobiles/pda's, has always urged it's users to adopt Copyright Commons licenses for their images and video. With the ratifying of UK CC licensing, we now offer a Copyright Commons wizard in the usermanager area, allowing a full range of CC choice. Our search functionality is also now geared around people searching for CC licensed images. We have a very strong community, with images in the hundreds of thousands, so we hope that in time our site will not only be a good way for people to store their images and video, but to become a resource for people who share, and share alike.

Ravensbourne College School of Computing for the Creative Industries

Philosophy

"The School of Computing for the Creative Industries is a new departure for Ravensbourne College. It retains Ravensbourne's commitment to vocationalism and practical skills, as well as Ravensbourne's spirit of innovation and enterprise. Though the School takes its inspiration and values from the core of the Ravensbourne tradition, it also embraces new opportunities and a new vision. The School's programmes are rigorous with a strong technical focus. One of the undergraduate programmes is delivered entirely via e-learning. The other programmes make strategic use of e-learning, digital communications, and Web 2.0 technologies as a living demonstration of, and a process of practical research in, the subject matter of the School."

Intellectual Property: Creative Commons

"Although we recognise an important role for trade secrets and proprietary knowledge, the School also recognises that open standards - and open source solutions - have been instrumental in the rapid growth and enduring success of the internet. Furthermore, we recognise that appropriation and reuse - rip, mix, and burn - are central to the progress of innovation in digital technology and the creative industries. A balanced view of intellectual property, therefore, recognises the crucial role of open source solutions and a "creative commons".

An important feature of the Web 2.0 platform is its use of open source building blocks. And the pace of innovation in the Web 2.0 landscape is accelerated by the frequent, and routine, open-sourcing of the tools and techniques of the platform.

The School of Computing for the Creative Industries will release its learning materials under a Creative Commons license to ensure their widest possible dissemination and use. Technical facilities in the School will be built on open source platforms. We will support students who wish to release projects under free and open source licenses."
